The Company: Qunnect is a dynamic, venture-backed startup in the heart of Brooklyn. We build and deploy first-in-class hardware to transform existing telecommunications infrastructure into quantum-secure networks for defense, intelligence, financial services, healthcare, and critical infrastructure. As Controller, you will play a crucial role in owning financial aspects of the company and will report directly to the CEO to achieve our next stages of growth. Role Mission: You are an accomplished accounting professional with a strong rack record of success building strong financial foundations for scale. You have worked with companies creating physical products and have a clear understanding of supply chain and inventory practices. You enjoy being hands-on as well as strategic, and have worked in start-up or high growth environments. You are excited to build a company’s core financial infrastructure to ensure Qunnect's is best-in-class.

You work successfully in a remote or hybrid work environment (in the NY area, you are welcome to work from our beautiful Brooklyn office; in all other areas of the USA, you will work remotely).

Core responsibilities

  • Close - Ensure the accurate and timely preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial closes in compliance with US GAAP reporting standards.
  • Financial operations - Manage (or build) the day-to-day financial operations of the company, including inventory, cash management, accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, expenses, equity management, and financial reporting. Achieve budgeting goals with proper scheduling, analysis, and corrective actions.
  • Strategic finance - Partner closely with the CEO to manage and maintain budget and financial projections. Provide financial analyses as needed, in particular for capital investments, pricing decisions, and contract negotiations. Partner closely with the manufacturing and science teams to uplevel financial acumen across the team.
  • Internal controls - Update, develop and document business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls. Drive continuous improvement and scale by developing internal control processes including standardization and automation.
  • Tax and reporting - Manage and comply with state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings, including those required for federal grants. Own external audit processes, coordinating with external auditors and regulatory authorities as needed. Comfort with (or willingness to learn) international tax regulations for foreign subsidiaries.

Expected outcomes:

3 months:

  • Partner closely with CEO to fully own day-to-day financial operations including budgeting and cash management, providing useful insights to CEO
  • Help prepare internal team and documentation for external audit
  • Work closely with CTO to upgrade inventory management and accounting

6 months

  • Support CEO with strategic financial matters related to capital raise
  • Upgrade internal controls based on company requirements and audit outcomes
  • Act as primary point of contact for external audit

12 months

  • Act as financial business partner to senior leadership team
  • Be primary financial point of contact for internal Qunnect team
  • Provide input into how the finance function at Qunnect will evolve as we scale - in terms of people and technology

Competencies:

  • Outcomes oriented: You will be an early member of Qunnect’s growing administrative team. As such, this is the role for somebody who is capable of autonomously driving items to completion. You should be comfortable working cross functionally to drive the financial success of Qunnect.
  • Start-up experience: You should thrive in high-growth environments with small teams. Experience in a start-up or high growth environment is a strong plus. We value day-to-day execution as well as being able to provide strategic direction within your area of expertise. You should have experience building the financial infrastructure, systems, processes, and automation of an organization to manage growth. You should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to articulate problems and propose alternative solutions.
  • High level of financial acumen: while we do not require specific experience to successfully act in this role, we expect you would have some experience comparable to: an accounting position within a Big 4 public accounting firm, finance position within a high-growth company, CPA, excellent knowledge of finance and accounting functions.
  • Attention to detail: The primary responsibilities of this role are critical to helping Qunnect manage its finances, people, and sales processes effectively. Strong attention to detail is an absolute must have.
