Job Summary
rStream is a federally funded startup bringing robotic waste sorting to the point of disposal creating a world where it takes zero human effort for all disposed materials to go to their highest purpose. We are hiring a Mechanical Engineering & Robotics Intern to support the design and fabrication of rStream’s sorting system during the winter/spring of 2025.
Job Description:
Our team is looking for a Co-Op student with an interest in solving challenging mechanical design and mechatronics problems for robotic systems. Through this opportunity, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team consisting of engineers and researchers to design and develop the hardware and controls of a compact waste sorting robot for serval industry changing applications. We are looking for students who are self-motivated and interested in working on hardware design, system logic and controls, and mechatronics.
Responsibilities:
- Design, fabricate, and assemble mechanical/robotic systems and test spaces, including structural, electromechanical, and sensing components.
- Maintain regular contact with team members to support their needs and requirements.
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and effective robotics lab environment.
- Run, document, and clearly communicate testing activities, conditions, and results.
- Occasional travel may be required.
- Additional responsibilities may be assigned.
Requirements/Skills:
- The candidate is a student in a B.S. or M.S. program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics/Robotics Engineering, Computer Science, or other relevant degree.
- Experience with mechanical CAD software (e.g., Fusion360 or Solidworks)
- Prototyping, 3D printing, novel mechanism design, hand tools, soldering
Preferred (not required):
- Typical mechatronic system component experience (e.g., sensors, software, circuits/schematics, microcontrollers, motors, and linkages)
- Experiment design
- Experience with segmentation and object detection
- Familiarity with version tracking/control (i.e., GitHub)
- Experience with fast-paced iteration of prototypes/products
- Effective collaboration, team work, and communication skills
- Specialized Skills: Familiarity with automation/robotics and IoT protocols
- Startup ready mentality
