Job Title: Fiber Spinning Intern

Location: East Bay Area, California

Job Type: Internship

About Us:

Supercarb, Inc. is on a mission to revolutionize the future of textiles. We are a fast-moving, sustainable startup focused on transforming industrial biopolymer waste into high-performance fibers for a wide array of applications. At Supercarb, we solve tough problems with creativity, speed, and purpose. We are passionate about reimagining the apparel industry, and we’re looking for an intern who is ready to join our journey.

What We’re Looking For:

We’re on the hunt for a motivated Fiber Spinning Intern who thrives in a dynamic, innovative environment. This isn’t your typical 9-to-5 internship—prepare to be challenged and to grow quickly as part of a high-energy team. If you’re driven, love hands-on problem-solving, and want to make a real impact, we want you on board.

As part of the Silicon Valley ecosystem, you'll also have access to some of the best hikes, trails, and food, just minutes away from San Francisco, Muir Woods, and Yosemite. It’s the perfect place to grow your career while enjoying the great outdoors!

Your Role:

You’ll dive deep into fiber spinning operations, playing a key role in the creation of next-generation sustainable fibers. Working closely with our team, you’ll get hands-on experience with advanced fiber production techniques and contribute to a fast-paced, innovative lab environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Wet Spinning Operations:

  • Set up, operate, and maintain wet spinning machinery to produce high-quality fibers.
  • Continuously monitor the spinning process to ensure optimal fiber formation and quality.
  • Adjust process parameters (temperature, speed, and chemical composition, among others) to enhance fiber performance.
  • Ensure smooth, consistent flow of polymer solutions throughout the equipment.

Research & Development:

  • Dive into the latest research, patents, and industry trends to help us stay ahead.
  • Experiment with various parameters to optimize the physical properties of our fibers, such as tensile strength, elongation, elasticity, fire retardancy, and antimicrobial properties.
  • Document findings and contribute to process improvement efforts.

Process Improvement:

  • Collaborate with our principal scientist to find innovative solutions that improve production efficiency and minimize waste.
  • Assist in the development of new fiber products and optimize current production methods.

Safety Compliance:

  • Follow all safety protocols when handling chemicals, machinery, and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and hazard-free work environment.

What You Bring to the Table:

  • Currently enrolled (or recently graduated) in a Master's or Ph.D. program. We welcome candidates from all academic backgrounds.
  • Experience in fiber production, wet spinning, or a similar technical field is a plus.
  • A hands-on, problem-solving mindset with a passion for tinkering and building.
  • A strong understanding of polymer chemistry, textile fibers, and spinning processes.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where ideas move quickly.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to document results clearly and effectively.
  • You’re a critical thinker, an ideator, and someone who thrives on solving complex challenges.

Physical Requirements:

  • Comfortable standing for long periods.
  • Ability to work in a lab environment with exposure to machinery, chemicals, and noise.

Timing: May to July (we are flexible)
